BIBER: Violin sonatas
Violin sonatas from the Kremsier archive
Anton Steck is certainly one of our great Baroque virtuosos, who knows more about the highly developed violin music of the 17th century than almost anyone else. He has now teamed up with the star gambist Hille Perl and selected seven previously unrecorded violin sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Biber and Georg Muffat, which have only survived in manuscripts, for the new CD. Not all of the works can be clearly identified as they have been handed down anonymously, but they are all masterpieces of their genre. Bernhard Moosbauer, for example, writes about Gorg Muffat's great sonata: "It is a compositionally demanding, architecturally masterful work, unique for its time. This sonata conveys an almost monumental impression." Together with Christian Rieger on the harpsichord and Lee Santana on the chitarrone, the two exceptional musicians conjure up a sunken world.
"One of the best examples of Baroque violin playing I have heard to date." • American Record Guide 2/06
