In contrast to the musical tradition of Western European cultures, which has been recorded in musical notation since early times, the Celtic musical heritage has been passed on through oral tradition from father to son and from teacher to pupil. Only a few pieces of Irish and Scottish tradition have been recorded over the centuries by collectors. Jordi Savall has of course studied these sources, but the direct encounter with today's heirs of the living tradition in Ireland and Scotland was, according to his own account, at least as important.
