June marks the 500th anniversary of the accession of Henry VIII to the throne. Reason enough to remember the extremely art-loving monarch, who was also an accomplished composer. This month OBSIDIAN presents the first complete recording of all works preserved in a manuscript of the British Library. Compiled in 1516, it contains works by Robert Fayrfax, Philippe Verdelot and John Taverner, as well as nine compositions by Henry VIII. The production is complemented by several songs by the monarch. The Ensemble Alamire under the direction of David Skinner, the Ensemble QuintEssential as well as the harpists Andrew Lawrence-King and Claire Wilkinson enable us to enjoy a truly royal listening experience.
