Scherchen's first appearance in France came relatively late, in 1929. Scherchen's idea was to offer an overview of the music of the last fifteen years.
In October 1953 he returned to Paris for a concert with the Orchestre National de France (included in the present set) and recorded some works by Mozart for 'Ducretet' (symphonies 40 and 41 and the famous concerto for flute and harp with Lily Laskine and Roger Bourdin).
After Scherchen's death in Florence, on June 12, 1965, many French musicians enlogized him: Pierre Boulez wrote: 'Scherchen had become a living legend: there is no doubt his death clean sup some old quarrels and now we will understand the true dimensions of his genius.
