Next to the Lübeck town hall is the gothic Marienkirche, once the church of the city's senate. Its central nave rises to enormous heights and allows the devout visitor to the church not only to feel its own smallness, but the enormous dimensions also bear witness to the pride with which the exalted Queen of the Hanseatic League presented herself to the world in the Middle Ages. In the baroque era, not much of the power and influence of past times had remained, but wealth and self-confidence still characterized the citizens of Lübeck.
