From 1908 to 1909 Bartók worked on small piano pieces for beginners, which he revised in 1943. These miniatures based on folk song arrangements were published in two issues by Boosey & Hawkes. It is no coincidence that Kodály, the most competent and knowledgeable reviewer of his friend's works, wrote a representative review for the special issue of the Viennese "Musikblätter des Anbruch", published on the occasion of his 40th birthday, not about large-scale works by the composer, but about the cycle "For Children".
