The Italian composer Ildebrando Pizzetti, born in 1880, is considered the founder of modern Italian music. In 1921, the Musical Times praised him as "without doubt the greatest musician in Italy today". Together with his colleagues Casella, Malipiero and Respighi, Pizzetti belonged to the so-called generation of the 1880s. His two string quartets on the present CD mark the development of his career with the early lyrical work in A major written in 1906 and the mature D major quartet of 1932-33, in which Pizzetti transcends traditional forms with powerful individual expressiveness
