In 1722 Georg Philipp Telemann used his appointment to the post of Thomaskantor twice to financially upgrade his position as Hamburg music director, which he had taken up the previous year, before finally cancelling it in Leipzig. At the end, for example, the Leipzigers chose another - Johann Sebastian Bach - with the resigned justification "Since you can't get the best now". One could suspect that the two gentlemen may not have been quite green against each other as competitors, but everything else is the case: both held each other in high esteem • Telemann was the godfather of Bach's son Philipp Emanuel, who was to succeed him as music director in Hamburg in 1767 (this time in competition with his younger brother Christoph Friedrich, who had also applied for the post). In Leipzig, Bach's father was able to tie in with an institution that Telemann had created there during his law studies: the Collegium Musicum of the university, with which he gave concerts and from whose ranks he recruited instrumentalists for his weekly cantata performances • It is hardly necessary to mention that Bach and Telemann were, of course, on the subscription lists of the works that the other composer had printed - that was a question of honour.
