Franz Schubert said: "Do you know funny music? I know of none!" This saying applies in a special way to Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise in view of the existential catastrophes that take place in the two cycles. Over the past decades, attempts have been made again and again to connect these works with political interpretations, since many young people felt that after the victory over Napoleon, won with the blood of their peers, they had been cheated of their hopes for more freedom; with oppression and censorship, the old order was restored. Of course, these stories of insurmountable desolation have nothing to do with revolution; rather, through the metaphor of unhappy love, they point to the shattered hopes of an entire generation.
