An elusively enigmatic figure as a composer, Enriquez de Valderrábano took more than twelve years to finish work on his vihuela collection, Silva de sirenas, published in Valladolid in 1547. very much a man of culture and a humanist, his compositions reflect a strong awareness of vocal polyphony: many of them take their inspiration from motets, villancicos or canciones that derive from different sources. He also wrote vihuela duets, the only ones to survive for this instrument and recorded here for the first time.
