Chamber music occupies four of the total of almost forty volumes in the new historical-critical complete edition of the works of Niels W. Gade from which the chamber compositions recorded here have been played. The compositional history of many of these works was long and complicated because Gade often submitted his older works to revision. For example, in April 1877 he completed the score of his String Quartet in E minor in five movements. It is not known, however, whether or not the quartet was ever performed in this form or part material was prepared on its basis. Whatever the case, Gade initially set this quartet aside and then returned to it twelve years later. Once again his complex forms with lyrical but also dramatic melodies are rendered audible, interpreted by the successful Danish ensemble MidtVest. »Even in the intricate texture the individual voices remain transparent; the focus on what is essential is more important than everything experimental.
