Extremely self-critical, Paul Dukas destroyed every one of his compositions that did not meet his sometimes extreme quality requirements. His preserved oeuvre is correspondingly small. It is therefore surprising that, despite four attempts between 1886 and 1889, he is one of the most important French composers who never received the Prix de Rome. Hervé Niquet presents the competition entries and other music by Dukas. The fact that they all escaped destruction by the composer clearly speaks for the music and against the jury at the Prix de Rome.
