This publication is a research on the creation of musical works related to the history of the Duchy of Urbino and the Montefeltro. Musical pieces which were dedicated to, commissioned for or simply conceived in this small centre, which only in appearance seems to be of secondary importance as regards the diffusion of music in Renaissance Italy. Although the contribution this city gave to the spread of the arts is well known, above all for the figures of great importance whom the city gave birth to; Raffaello Sanzio, Federico Barocci and Francesco Brandani, nevertheless too little is still known about how important it was for music and its diffusion. The existence of a manuscript like the one in question, bears witness to the importance given to music among the many arts practised in Urbino. In the pages of the 'Medici Codex 1518', one can see a refined union of the arts, being as they are finely decorated with minatures perhaps by artists such as Perugino, Andrea Mantegna and Leonardo da Vinci, or at least others belonging to their school.
