In the politically turbulent period towards the end of the 100 Years War, the English King Henry VI around 1440 with Eton College a sanctuary where devotion, charity and education could flourish. Not 100 years later on many libraries were replaced by religious Reforms and counter-reforms under Heinrich the VIII was destroyed. All the more surprising, that much of the precious 500-year-old Eton Choirbook survived these times: From 126 of the original 224 leaves are preserved who have a treasure trove of spiritual Works by 25 English composers from of the pre-Reformation period. Not only the musical content of this unique artifact of immeasurable value, also the manuscript itself, for whose Production 112 calves lose their lives cost the annual salary of a man in good standing even then.
The renowned and highly praised english vocal ensemble Tonus Peregrinus presents at this CD among others the earliest polyphonic "Passion", by a named composer, two heartwarming motets by five and six votes and the wonderful 13-voice canon "Jesus autem transiens".
