Both Frederick the Great and his heir to the throne, Frederick William II, were great patrons of the musical arts. In the course of her reign, almost all the renowned viola da gamba virtuosos of the late eighteenth century came to Berlin to play at court. The greatest virtuoso of this epoch was Ludwig Christian Hesse. Many works for viola da gamba were written at the Berlin court around him, most of them of a high technical standard and with a spelling idiomatic for the instrument, which can be traced back directly to Hesse.
