Medieval liturgies, half worship, half mystery play, have been preserved in the Iberian region until the 15th and 16th centuries. These "Songs of the Sibyl" vividly depicted what people expected from the Last Judgement, interrupted again and again by choral singing to the words: "On the Day of Judgement our service will be rewarded". Unlike the usual Latin liturgy, the songs of the Sibylla were sung in the vernacular, and in the case of the pieces on this CD, in Mallorcan or Valencian Catalan. • Although the poems of the Sibylline chants have been handed down in church registers, the music has mostly been preserved only in fragments. Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras have intensively studied the tradition of the various Sibylline chants and created musical reconstructions of these impressive processional songs. The rich Arabic heritage of the Iberian Peninsula is clearly the inspiration for the artistic decoration of the melodies. Thus the music on this CD takes its listeners far back into the medieval traditions of Spain.
