The most important musical form of the Renaissance, the Madrigal, developed into an experimental laboratory at Monteverdi. The composer spent his entire life in this genre, revolutionized the musical thinking of his time, opened the door to the beginning of the Baroque, as the present anthology by Paul Agnnew and Les Arts Florissants impressively demonstrates. The selection of madrigals traces Monteverdi's musical biography: from his youth in Cremona to the development of an unmistakable voice in Mantua to the late years in Venice. Between 2011 and 2017, Paul Agnew and Les Arts Florissants performed all eight Monteverdi madrigal books in various locations in Europe. The recordings were made at the Cité de la Musique in Paris and were only minimally corrected to reproduce the sensual atmosphere of the concerts as faithfully as possible.
