"My VI. will give up puzzles that only a generation that has absorbed and digested my first five can dare to solve," wrote Gustav Mahler in 1904 about his symphony, on which he himself affixed the label "The Tragic". On their third joint recording for the label Ondine, the Philadelphia Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach interpret the monumental work in an orchestral and intellectual tour de force. The world famous "Philadelphia sound" can be heard here in SACD sound quality. As a special delicacy, the Double-SACD also offers the discoverable piano quartet, which Mahler wrote at the age of only 16 and of which there are only a few recordings so far.
