In 1861 Liszt travelled to Rome to obtain papal approval for his marriage to the Catholic Princess Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein, but after the failure of the attempt felt an ever stronger impulse to become a cleric and, as a renewer of Catholic church music, a true "new Palestrina". In 1865 he finally received the lower ordinations, and subsequently the "Abbé Liszt" created a whole series of works from piano pieces to choral movements and masses that awaken religious devotion. In addition to two well-known compositions, this CD also offers a whole series of works that have not been available on sound carriers before. An interesting contribution to the Liszt Year.
