Liszt's two piano concertos combine the revolutionary new playing techniques that Liszt wrested from the piano during his virtuoso years with orchestral works based on poetic ideas. Bartók's "fanatical pursuit of the new and the rare" in Liszt's oeuvre is, of course, not necessarily in the foreground in his Fantasies for Piano and Orchestra, these paraphrases of foreign works; the composer is more interested in brilliance and virtuosity. In addition to the famous piano concertos, the 3CD set also presents all "Fantasies for Piano and Orchestra" such as Wanderer Fantasy (after Schubert), Fantasy on Beethoven's Ruins of Athens, Polonaise brillante (after Weber) and many more.
