Herbert Joos called his orchestral suite Change of Beauty, which he premiered on the occasion of the awarding of the Honorary Jazz Prize Baden-Württemberg 2017. The fact that beauty can only endure through change and is always a question of opinion is a realization that is in line with the experiences Herbert Joos has had over the course of a dazzling musical life.

The trumpeter, flugelhorn player and composer appeared on the jazz scene at a time when certainties were crumbling. Born in 1940, influenced by individualists in music such as Miles Davis, Chet Baker and Billie Holiday, he initially learned the craft of imitation in formations such as the Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, but at the same time experienced the beginnings of aesthetic resistance

He found like-minded people, colleagues such as Hans Koller, Wolfgang Dauner and Albert Mangelsdorff, who took a similarly cheeky approach to the musical zeitgeist. Joos experimented with the proximity to contemporary classical music and electronics, but soon returned to the possibilities of natural sounds, from the trumpet itself to the alphorn.

Many of his musical companions became friends, so it is no surprise that Herbert Joos was able to put together an all-star line-up of improvisers for the prizewinners' concert. Change Of Beauty is a way of summing up, in the interplay and contrast of dynamics, the principles of orchestral fullness and reduction to the transparency of individual instruments. It is the growth of a sound organism, not linear, but rather in ever new, complementary approximations.
