Founded in 1909 by Sergei Djagilew, the Ballets Russes quickly became one of the most important ballet companies of the 20th century after their triumphant first performance in Paris. Legendary is their association with composer Igor Stravinsky, whose ballet The Firebird in 1910 marked the breakthrough for the 27-year-old composer. The premiere of Le Sacre du Printemps on May 29, 1913, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris led to one of the most memorable theatrical scandals of the entire century; after only 13 performances, the piece was withdrawn from the program, and it was not until more than 70 years later, after extensive research, that a reconstruction of the original choreography could be created, captured on this Blu-ray disc.
