Founded in 1972, the Kocian Quartet is one of the many Czech chamber music ensembles of international standing that were trained by Pavel Kohout, cellist of the Smetana Quartet (e.g. the Talich, Pražak and Stamitz Quartets). With recordings of works by Hindemith, Krasa, Haas and Mozart, the musicians have so far impressively demonstrated their interpretive breadth. The present CD brings together the last three string quartets by Joseph Haydn, who, in addition to his many other merits, became immortal as the father of the string quartet genre.
