In 1786, Joseph Haydn was commissioned to write music for a special form of Passion devotion in the cathedral of Cádiz in Spain, which was held there every year during Lent. The seven last words of Jesus on the cross were the focus of the service, Haydn was to provide meditation music for the silent devotions in this service. He added a prelude and a concluding dramatic movement to the seven sacred sonatas that were written in this way, which depicted the earthquake after Jesus' death.
The work was first performed on Good Friday 1787 and was such a success that Haydn decided that very same year to arrange Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlöser am Kreuz for string quartet, thus ensuring that the composition would be widely distributed.
