Franz Joseph Haydn’s two almost definitely ascribable concertos for cello and orchestra have become common repertoire, and are generally considered amongst the most interesting after Vivaldi’s. This recording ends with a far less known concerto by the Moravian composer Pavel Vranický, greatly appraised in his time not just by the Habsburgs but also by colleagues, including Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Some critics believe his more than fifty string quartets to be even better than Mozart’s, while his Symphonies can match Haydn’s with no sense of inferiority.
