During the 1770s Haydn created 125 trios for baryton, viola and cello for Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy. The instrument, which was quickly out of use, is related to the viola da gamba. It had additional resonating strings that could give it a silvery tone and could also be plucked. Apart from Guido Balestracci, there are very few musicians who master Haydn today, and so there is still a lot of wonderful Haydn to discover here.
