Guy van Waas and Les Agrémens shed light on the popularity of Joseph Haydn in the French metropolis. His works found their way into the Parisian concert halls early on: there is spiritual proof of the performance of the Farewell Symphony in the Concert spirituel in 1784, one year before the competing company, the Concert de la Loge Olympique, commissioned the Paris Symphonies. Those of the Parisian publishers who were unable to obtain a Haydn symphony at the time, unceremoniously re-declared the work of another composer. This is what happened with the D Major Symphony by Joseph Martin Kraus recorded here. Musicology can sometimes be listened to with great pleasure.
