With his oratorios, Handel created a form of sacred scenic music that inspired composers such as Haydn, Beethoven and Mendelssohn to create their own works well into the 19th century. Mozart made an arrangement of the Messiah, which is still performed today and has been recorded in numerous recordings. English audiences still love Handel's oratorios to this day, and they are still an integral part of British musical life

Unlike his Leipzig colleague Johann Sebastian Bach, Handel did not fall into oblivion after his death, as the oratorio Israel in Babylon proves. In 1764, five years after Handel's death, the composer's most popular melodies were brought together in this piece, which at its premiere thrilled the London audience. Handel's operas, oratorios and orchestral pieces are the sources from which the arrangers of Israel in Babylon drew, and even for today's listeners the work is still a firework of musical highlights from the pen of one of the greatest composers in music history.
