"Dora De Marinis's album notes for this Naxos issue lump both of Ginastera's piano concertos in his final, neo-expressionist phase, but they are quite different kettles of keys. The First Concerto, premiered in 1962, evinces a rhythmic verve that takes some of the harshness out of the composer's atonal regimen. The composer had an air for juicy sonorities (like the avian shrillings and wisps of melody that suggest Messiaen) and a melancholic lyricism that is another sort of inheritance from Alban Berg. A robust, tropical, earthy work, the First Concerto has the makings of a real crowd-pleaser, especially with its arm-busting finish. De Marinis has the measure of this, to say nothing of sensitive dynamic shading and the masterly articulation of opposing voices in the right and left hands...
De Marinis's big tone (displayed in 2's three-minute cadenza) and obvious understanding of Ginastera's music serve these pieces well, and Julio Malaval has the Slovakians playing as if to the manner born.
