The fugue is considered the baroque art of composition par excellence, and with its strict rules it has survived all eras since then. Composers from Mozart to Beethoven and Schumann to Shostakovich have honed their spirit on it, and generations of music students have sweated over the solution to weaving a given theme into the artful web of a fugue in exams. • On this CD, the Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet presents an all-round take on the theme of the fugue: with Palestrina, the journey begins to take in Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Brahms with Shostakovich and Stefan Pohlit, born in 1976. The four virtuosos elicit from their recorders a wealth of tones and timbres that no one would expect from the instrument, which has been somewhat obtrusively dismissed as a somewhat intrusive instrument. This is also where the advantages of the new sound world of the SACD come into their own in a most impressive way. Conclusion: entertaining at the highest level!
