The sound of a consort of viols unfolds a special magic: floating lightly, silky and shiny, and with an almost ethereal calm. In finely graded registers – from soprano to bass – the voices of the viols merge into a transparent, almost weightless overall sound that seems to suspend time and gravity. This unique sound aesthetic made the viol consort one of the most popular and sophisticated ensemble forms in England around 1600. A chest of viols – a complete set of viols in different sizes – was a symbol of prestige in musically educated, upper-class households.

The leading English composers of the era created an exceptionally rich repertoire for this ensemble: elegant dance movements, freely composed fantasies and highly complex polyphonic works that combine intimacy, sophistication and compositional mastery. This music marks the high point of the English viola da gamba tradition – concentrated chamber music with great emotional depth.

The Ensemble Private Musicke present with their chest of viols a carefully curated selection of highlights from this repertoire. Works by Holborne, Dowland, Ferrabosco II, Tye and Coperario unfold here in all their colourfulness and tonal elegance.
