Connoisseurs have known it for a long time: the disdain generally shown for the viola is just as misplaced as the common violist jokes. This becomes especially clear when one listens, as here, to a violist of the rank of Nobuko Imai. The arrangements and original compositions by Japanese composers (some of them based on works by Handel and Bach) recorded on this album show off the advantages of the instrument to its best advantage. Who still needs the sound of violin or cello?
