Donizetti's fiftieth opera, Marino Faliero, was premiered in Paris on 12 March 1835 with four of the best singers of the time. Just a few weeks later the London premiere took place. Although these two premieres of Bellinis I Puritani (Naxos Historical 8.110259-60) in marino Faliero then enjoyed an internationally long and successful period that lasted throughout the 19th century. Then the opera disappeared from the repertoire and was only rediscovered in 1966 with a modern new production. Mariano Faliero is set in Venice in 1355 when the historic Faliero, then Doge, was sentenced for an alleged coup d'état and finally beheaded. Donizetti created an opera full of conspiratorial adventures.
