Besides the Strauss family dynasty, the Schrammel brothers – Johann (1850-93) and Josef (1852-95) – were the most popular musicians at Vienna’s social events during the second half of the 19th c. Sadly, however, at almost the height of their fame, personal circumstances took a turn and both died at age 42. Their instruments are part of the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and are played by the Philharmonia Schrammeln, Wien, an ensemble of members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra that came to international fame through the TV film of the 2005 New Year’s concert.
