Strauss R.: Elektra
Christoph von Dohnányi, one of the finest Strauss interpreters of our time, brings a strong cast to this production of Richard Strauss's opera "Elektra" – the composer's work that can be considered the pinnacle of his operatic oeuvre and clearly accentuates the modernity of his musical language. The sounds are raw, dissonant, and sharp; some passages sound as hard as granite. The music perfectly reflects the underlying plot, which is full of psychological subtext.
Elektra, the first of many fruits of the collaboration between Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, draws on Siegmund Freud's psychoanalytic theories as a study of mental disruption and psychological abysses. At the same time, Elektra is an opera about strong female characters in a fractured society and their functions as mother and child, as sisters, daughters, and friends.
