Beschreibung
The musical selections on this album by the percussion ensemble Smoke and Mirrors are refreshingly fully developed works, each different from the others and each with its own story. As a whole, these pieces illustrate the breadth of contemporary classical music written for percussionists, as well as the ensemble’s flexibility and virtuosity. The recording includes compositions by Steve Reich, Eric Whitacre, Happenstance, a world premiere recording by Derek Tywoniuk, and works by Toru Takemitsu and Ravel. Released in 2012 and now available on audiophile-grade 180g Vinyl, mastered at 45prm, lacquers cut by Bernie Grundman. “Here’s a relatively new label dedicated to recording young and established concert artists with minimalist recording techniques using vacuum tube microphones recorded directly to two tracks. There’s an immediacy, clarity, and transparency to this modern classical percussion recording that seemingly brings the performers to your living room.” (The Absolute Sound)
