Instrumental music from the Middle Ages has been passed down only occasionally, since professional musicians were mostly illiterate, the music was only passed on orally. Only monasteries wrote down music, whereby one naturally limited oneself to spiritual music. Our knowledge of medieval instrumental music is limited to courtly dance music and its few examples in treatises. The Ensemble Millenarium has not only studied preserved sources, but in its interpretation also conveys something of the musical attitude of the medieval musicians, who were not at all averse to exhibiting virtuosity.
