No one will attribute the music of Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco a significance that will change the world. However, anyone who wants to deal with the work of the Italian composer (1895-1968) - and not only discographically approximately, but also extensively and reliably with a piano soloist - may make use of this Naxos CD without any timidity. Born near Barcelona, Jordi Masó not only intones and interprets as a data transmitter, but also as an ambassador of the composer named after the Spanish district of Castilla Nueava, which his family, Sephardic Jews, had had to leave for Italy in 1942. •
The pieces collected here belong to a cultivated late romanticism on the threshold of Impressionism in the sense of Ravel and Debussy. Opera 9 and 12 may be mentioned as examples in this stylistic direction. The works propagated by Naxos and Masó will not be a fruitful source of excitement for today's performance practice of the leading and succeeding pianists, but they may complement the existing knowledge in a welcome way for some of the interested audience.
