opis
When Anton Bruckner began work on his Sixth Symphony in September 1879, he led a very modest existence in Vienna, for neither his teaching activities at the local conservatory nor his work as an organist were particularly well-paid posts. His success as a composer was also long in coming; the performance of his Third had been a catastrophe and the Fourth and Fifth had not even been performed. Nevertheless, the urge to compose was so great that Bruckner was able to complete the Sixth in September 1881 and - contrary to his other habit - did not even revise it
The result contains some of Bruckner's most sensitive and beautiful melodies, but does not save on climaxes which he was able to perform well with a respectably large orchestra. The pulsating interpretation by Christoph Eschenbach and the London Philharmonic Orchestra was recorded live at London's Royal Festival Hall and captures in a wonderful way the dense structure of this work, which its creator Bruckner heard only once.
