The First World War, the demarcation line of all artistic breaks, separates Berg's "Lyrische Suite" (1925) from Schönberg's "Verklärter Nacht" (1899). On both sides of this traumatic caesura, each of these works alludes to an extramarital relationship. The original poem "Verklärte Nacht" by Richard Dehmel is about forgiveness for an illegitimate child. The amorous correspondence between Alban Berg and Hanna Fuchs and his painful epilogue form the background for the composition of the "Lyrical Suite".
