The bassoon’s nasal cantabile tone, sonorous sound, and often-mischievous sophistication evidently explain its favourite’s status among French composers. During the nineteenth and twentieth century bassoon technique swiftly developed; additional keys enabled the enlargement of the instrument’s tonal range and facilitated chromatic playing. Never-heard expressive worlds opened up, and composers made frequent use of them – and it is not least for this reason that the compositions recorded here by Rodion Tolmachev today have their place in every competition programme.
