In his compositions, Catalan-born Leonardo Balada fuses tradition with modernity and folklore with avant-garde in a result of astonishing harmony. With his Capriccio No. 1 he honours the poet Federico García Lorca in a combination of virtuosity and dancing lightness. Capriccio No. 5 is based on the piano music of Isaac Albéniz. Balada finely works out the melodies and lets the instruments meet in real duels. With surrealistic dexterity, Balada translates the work of his colleague Mozart in his Little Night Music in Harlem into the present. In Reflejos, sadness and inflammatory brilliance are in balance.
