In 1789 Mozart attended a performance of Bach's motet "Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied". One of the choirboys, Friedrich Rochlitz, later became a musicologist and reported what a musical revelation Mozart had experienced at that moment: "No sooner had the choir sung a few bars than Mozart (...) When the singing was finished, he cried out with joy: "That is something to learn from! (...) So he let himself be given the written out voices - and now it was a joy for the silent observer to see how eagerly Mozart sat down, distributed the voices around him, and, forgetting everything else, did not get up until he had looked through everything that was there from Sebastian Bach
