Bach: Clavierübung III - The Chorales

In 1739 Bach published the third part of his "Clavierübung", in which he compiled a collection of large-format chorale arrangements, the content of which is oriented towards the liturgical sequence of the church service. It is framed by the no less large-format, five-part Prelude and Fugue in E-flat. Some of the chorale arrangements may have had predecessors which were subjected to revision for publication in this collection. The performers on this recording juxtapose Bach's arrangements with vocal versions of the chorales, and much older ones at that: They are from the pens of Heinrich Schütz, Johann Hermann Schein, and Michael Praetorius. And that makes sense, because Bach's collection is both retrospective and modern in its layout and style.
