David Oistrakh was the shining winner of the first "Concours Reine Élisabeth de Belgique" in 1937, also known simply as the Ysaÿe Competition after its founder Eugène Ysaÿe. The great violinist had given the impetus for it and also participated in the first preparations before he died in 1931.
