During the colonial period a rich sacred music tradition flourished in Latin America. The choristers of cathedrals and missions spread all over the continent, and Spanish and local chapel masters composed hundreds of masses, motets and villancicos. The musical and poetic language of these works is mostly Spanish and popular in character and unmistakably shows their missionary task: to bring the people into the Church. This is not "folklore" in the modern sense of the word. The chanzonetas came from Spain or were written by immigrant bandmasters or by early Spanish "criollos". This recording also features composers who have never set foot on American soil. The Ensemble Elyma under Gabriel Garrido introduces some of the most beautiful examples of this ever fascinating music.
