In the library of the University of Compostella, under catalogue number Ms265, a manuscript is kept which has gone down in music history as the Guerra manuscript. In 1998, musicologists ÁlvaroTorrente and Pablo Rodríguez discovered this collection of 111 sheets of secular Tonadas (songs) from the second half of the 17th century.
The manuscript is named after the copyist José Miguel de Guerra (1646 -1722), who unfortunately did not mention the names of the composers. However, some pieces were also found in other manuscripts, and so some of the compositions can certainly be attributed to such renowned composers as Juan Hidalgo, José Marín, Juan de Navas, Cristóbal Galán, Juan Del Vado or Matías Ruiz. This realization and the fact that the foliant - what Paper and ink - of the highest quality, make the Guerra manuscript one of the most valuable anthologies of Spanish vocal music of that era.
