Brahms' orchestral music works on so many levels simultaneously. It is a huge challenge for the performers to ensure that this orchestral complexity (the numerous hints and ambiguities he uses) does not blur or cloud the tension between the elaborately crafted surface of his music and the subtle ups and downs of the sensations hidden beneath it. The idea that we can reconstruct the "real" and "original" Brahms is, of course, a chimera.
