During Mendelssohn's eighth stay in England, the music publisher Coventry & Collier approached him with the wish to write some compositions for organ - with English volunteers in mind, short and with improvisational freedom. Even though Mendelssohn initially felt restricted because of the required brevity of the pieces, he nevertheless accepted the commission. The idea of presenting a work with a pedagogical purpose at the same time as the pieces led to these six sonatas, which combine references to tradition with the exploration of new musical territory in the true Mendelssohn manner: Traditional forms of chorale and fugue are juxtaposed with cantabile parts, variation forms and fantasies fed by improvisation.
