Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was long regarded (without closer examination) as a mass producer of market-tailored serenade music who distinguished himself much more in his capacity as a music publisher than as a composer in his own right. Mozart and Haydn had a very different view of this matter: both held Hoffmeister in very great esteem as a composer and often entrusted him with arrangements of their own works. To be sure, our recording contains entertaining music; after all, that was what serenades and divertimentos were all about. However, everything is marked by high compositional mastery and a great wealth of imagination.
